April 2021 – Writing and photography for magazines and platforms has been on the backburner for me. Since Q2/2021 I shift up a gear and start to write for publications on a more frequent basis. Every week I start up a reportage featuring a collectioneur, classic car dealer, racing team or special car that begs for wide public attention.
Today with the borders closed but with possibilities in sight I welcome publishers with opportunities to publish online or offline.
In 2017, 2018 and 2019 I was lead-editor for 3 Dutch car magazines. And in April 2021 I’m back on the block. Click on the images to enlarge.
In the beginning…
In 2004 I started to write short stories and reviews about the classic cars I adored in my youth. I met owners of a Triumph TR6, Lotus Europa, Lamborghini Espada and Countach and posted my write ups at the Pistonheads Motoring Forums.
Online platforms and magazines started asking me for pictures but at the time they did not like to pay. Not for me then. How times have changed.
Back in those days I borrowed a D70, Nikon’s first consumer level digital SLR camera. In 2006 I decided to buy my own DSLR, an Olympus E300. It proved to be a flawless piece of kit and I still use it every now and then. As long one chooses a proper lens…
At the time Pistonheads was one of the few automotive platforms and a fertile ground for car photography. I was lucky to be one of the youngsters that caught the attention of the community. The upcoming Dutch automotive online forum Autoblog.nl particularly liked my public blogging. Without any commercial interest I was reluctant to publish.
Spa 6 Hours
And then I discovered the Spa 6 Hours meeting. Actually I was invited by a racing team. The ‘Spa6‘ is the classic car racing season closer and a sure ‘Petrolhead Nirvana’. It’s ‘the place to be’ for every petrolhead with a slight interest in classic car racing.
The signature ‘Guy On The Wall’ was born. The La Source hairpin was my spot to pan the flashing-by racing action. A lot of the teams liked my pictures and asked me for the big files. Since September 2006 I snapped thousands of racing cars rounding La Source.
I sell my images. More than a few owners and enthusiasts have a poster of ‘a car at La Source‘ in their garage, workshop or office. I published photobooks via the Blurb platform. Every now and then (international) magazines asked me to supply pictures for their articles. The racing drivers found me on the TenTenths Motoring Forum.
Both Lola and Chevron Heritage published photography on their online scrapbook sections. In 2009 Lola invited me for a factory tour.
Since I had a job photography was just a favorite hobby. I was in no need to add another specialism. Until the amount of publication on the Pistonheads motoring forums grew to substantial proportions and I then decided to duplicate ‘picture and caption’ on Facebook social media. With the result that Automotive Industry professionals found me.
In 2010 producer and director Alexander Davidis asked me to still photograph his GT Racer film project ‘The Algarve Special’, I worked with online platform Classic Car Monthly to film a Spa Six Hours meeting. I also supplied images to websites, magazines and books.
Still I served my photography as a side order. Within time writing became more and more important to me. Since 2012 I started to work as a marketer for B2B entrepreneurs, SME and corporates. In 2017, 2018 and 2019 I was a lead-editor for 3 Dutch car magazines.
In April 2021 I write and photograph for magazines and platforms. Together with a professional photographer, I take care of 2 reportages a day.
